If you've been out and about, then you'll be aware of the world's current situation. Shit is really hitting the fan at a previously unforeseen rate. Unemployment is at an all time high across the world, our economy both locally and internationally is in, what - is this the fourth ‘once in a lifetime’ crash of our generation? Oh, and not to mention the genocides and wars that we are forced to spectate to a level of intimacy that no past generation has ever had to deal with.
Shits fucked. But one thing that we can do is support the people around us, bring people together and celebrate the best thing humanity has to offer: shaking that ass.
Tāmaki Makaurau has some of the best and brightest musicians in our country (yes, even if we include Wellington), yet they struggle to get people to show up to events. Why is that? Well, talking to a few friends who have previously put on gigs, the primary reason is stress on all sides of the equation. Punters wallets are tight, and creatives are dealing with the same issue while spreading their energy thin, having to organise bands, venues, social media and often, if not always, also playing the gig themselves. It's no wonder that unfortunately these events don't reach as far as they could.
So spread the load! Get a group of friends together, and pass out the roles and responsibilities needed to put that shit together. Venue hire ranges from free to $400, up to a couple grand if you wanna go big. I know that sounds like a lot, because it is, but split that seven ways, cold email bands and a venue, charge $15 a ticket and you'll break even. Trust me. Well actually I take no responsibility if you don't, but you'll for sure get me through the door.
In these dark times we need to come together, let loose and have a good time when we can. I hope to see you at a gig of yours soon.
